Roman Candy Company has been a New Orleans tradition since 1918. The gourmet taffy is made by hand in the wagon and driven through the streets of New Orleans by a mule. My brother-in-law, Ron Kottemann, is the current Roman Candy Man. His grandfather, Samuel Cortese, started the business and now my nephew, Daniel Kottemann, is working with him to continue the family business.
Ron and his wagon have been a staple at Jazz Fest in New Orleans since the festival started in 1971. He is always parked in the same spot and many people return to the wagon year after year to get their special treat.
Each evening when the festival comes to a close, the sun sets on the wagon at just the right spot to bathe the entire scene in a special warm light that only comes at a certain hour. I have taken many photographs of people gathered in front of the wagon but it was not until Jazz Fest 2018 that I got this group of friends.
