Capitol Hill Clinton, oil on canvas, sold

Categories: ,

This hill on Capitol Street in the oldest part of Clinton, Mississippi, now referred to as “Olde Towne”. Clinton was officially founded in 1823 but had been begun to be settled in 1805 by Americans coming down the Natchez Trace when this part of Mississippi was still owned by the Choctaws.

Clinton was under consideration to be made the capital of Mississippi and Capitol Street reflects the hope that it would be chosen. Instead, Jackson, located about 20 miles to the east, was made the capital, but the street name and the hill remain.
